Photography

Long ago, when photography meant F-Stops, light meters, and manual focus, it was understandable that photos were often terrible. However, with modern automatic cameras, all that's required is a pinch of patience and care. True, not everyone's work will look "professional," and this need not be your aspiration. However, it would be really nice if everyone's photos are self-explanatory. Pictures are worth a thousand words, ya' know. They shouldn't require a thousand words. Tip #1: Overcast daylight generally gives better results than direct sunlight.

Tip #1: For indoor shots, try to use soft window light.

Tip #1: Generally, avoid light that produces harsh bright areas and dark shadows.

Tip #1: Get as close to your subject as possible.

Tip #1: Use a tripod, particularly on telephoto shots.

Tip #1: Ask yourself, "If I didn't already know what's in my photo, could I identify the photo's subject matter and purpose without asking the photographer?"

Photo-Editing Software

Many digital cameras are accompanied by photo-editing software that, frankly, isn't worth using. We recommend U-Lead's PhotoImpact software. You can usaully find it "New In Box" for $50 or less if you settle for a stale version (check Ebay and similar).

Typically, you can get by with just 4 tools in any photo-editing software:

  • Brightness/Contrast
  • Sharpen
  • Crop
  • Re-size
